One of our servers experienced minor downtime early hours or Thursday morning, we are looking into what happened, full services were restored just before 6:30am
We pride ourselves on our very good uptime records, and will get to the bottom of what went wrong this morning and advise.
Network Solutions Domain Deletion Policy - 03/19/2012 17:40:56
Wow, if you have a domain name with Network Solutions, be very careful - here we thought there were cowbows in New Zealand, over in America you have Network Solutions. If you don't renew your domain name before expiry date, they take away your right to the grace period (as given to all .NZ domain names) on that day, then they will offer to get the domain name back for $250USD - Called a "Redemption" fee - what a joke!!.
Network Solution are just resellers via Key-Systems GmbH in Germany.
Make a stand here, stop paying for something you have a right over, and tell them that too.

14. Re-instating a Cancelled Domain Name
14.1 During the "pending release" period, the registrar will able to fully re-instate the domain name for the registrant, so that it becomes active again. The domain name is also able to be transferred to a new registrar and be reinstated by the gaining registrar.
14.2 The billing process will be unaffected by the cancellation and any re-instatement.
14.3 Although the domain name will not have been billed for the period that it was pending release, once it has been re-instated the billing process will generate "catch-up" transactions, from the original cancellation date.
Take a note about their fine print stating "Country specific domains have to be renewed 57 days prior to expiry" so getting an email 14 days before it's due jsut sux.
Note this following image is from the very BOTTOM of their renewal email - no wonder customers miss it!
Magento Error 503: Service Unavailable Error - 02/14/2012 17:39:31
We have experienced an Magento Error 503: Service Unavailable issue on a major Magento powered site today, and the error was stating that there was a server issue.
After a bit of digging round, the error looks bad as it says:
"The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."
Afer checking and re-checking the server logs, the cause of this is a file created in the public_html directory called maintenance.flag
If you remove/rename that file, site will be online again no problem at all.
It looks like Magento creates this file when in Maintenance mode - not an ideal situation at all, but simple to fix.
If anyone running Magento has any further issues, please get hold of support.

Another big round of shakes in Christchurch today, very sad to see in our wonderful city, and the cleanup work that needs to be done yet again in parts of town.
Servers ran 100% normal with zero downtime, which we expected from this quake.

FlexiHost have just released our first iPhone application, which will allow you to do domain lookup's and ordering directly from your iPhones.
This is a first for any NZ company we believe being able to lookup and purchase a .nz domain name from your phone.
We hope this application is useful for when you are out and about wanting to see if domain names are available.
